The recall affects several models and is due to an issue with an electrical component in the transmission oil pump that could overheat.

The companies have advised car owners to park away from buildings and outside until inspected.

This is the latest in a series of fire-related recalls of Hyundai and Kia vehicles in recent years.

Regarding the most recent recall, Kia said there were six reports of "thermal events" but no accidents or injuries.

Hyundai said it has four similar reports and has not recorded any crashes, injuries or deaths due to the problem.

Besides the risk of fire, Hyundai stated that heat damage can trigger a short circuit that affects other vehicle controllers.

“Owners are advised to park outside and away from buildings until the recall repair is complete,” the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said.
