BYD Received the Ro-Ro Ship to Carry Its Electric Vehicles

BYD has taken an important step to grow in the electric vehicle market. The Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer has received Explorer 1, the first of eight Ro-Ro ships it has ordered. Explorer 1 is a ship that can carry nearly 8 thousand vehicles at a time and can operate on both LNG and diesel fuel.

BYD wants to compete in the world market with its electric vehicles. For this purpose, it ordered eight Ro-Ro ships to increase its market share overseas. Ro-Ro ships are ships that transport vehicles by driving them onto the deck of the ship rather than loading them onto trailers. In this way, vehicle transportation becomes both faster and more economical.

Explorer 1, An Environmentally Friendly Ship

Explorer 1, the first Ro-Ro ship delivered by BYD, draws attention as an environmentally friendly ship. The ship was developed as dual-fuel. This means that the ship can run on both LNG (liquefied natural gas) and diesel fuel. LNG is known as a cleaner fuel than diesel fuel. Because LNG reduces harmful emissions such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide.

Explorer 1 also has many energy-saving features. The ship uses a system that combines the shaft generator and the battery system. This system enables the ship to produce and store electrical energy while cruising. Thus, the ship can use electrical energy in port or at slow cruise. Additionally, the ship features details such as energy-saving devices, friction-reducing measures and anti-fouling paint.

Explorer 1 Will Accelerate BYD's Exports to Europe

Explorer 1 is the first of the ships that will carry BYD's electric vehicles to Europe. The ship stands out with its length of 199.9 meters, width of 38 meters, draft of 9 meters and cruising speed of 18.5 knots. The ship can carry nearly 8 thousand vehicles at a time. This gives BYD a significant advantage to meet the demand in the European market.

BYD states that the production of six of the eight Ro-Ro ships it ordered has been approved, and two have been added to the contract as options. The cost of these ships is announced as approximately 700 million dollars.
