Allison is delighted to return to her managerial role.

James Allison

Allison, who started his coaching career with Lotus and then switched to Ferrari, has been a part of Mercedes since the 2017 season. During this period, he personally signed five of the eight team championships in a row.

Allison, who was moved to a more serious role as technical manager in April 2021 and left the day-to-day work of the team to Mike Elliott, was more like a control mechanism for two years.

Shortly after Elliott took office, the long-awaited 2022 rule changes took place and ground effect vehicles made a return to the series.

Many teams entered the ground effect period with different concepts, while Mercedes tried to stand out by choosing a radical concept such as the zero sidepod.

However, this choice negatively affected the team, as the concept that did not provide the downforce in the simulator also caused a problem such as ripple.

Despite everything, Mercedes did not give up on the concept and made a double in Brazil, the second from the last race last year, and entered this season with the same concept.

The result was a big disappointment, as Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff announced that they would make serious changes after the first race and that the zero sidepod concept was thrown away.

A big change took place in the technical area as well, the team swapping places between Elliott and Allison, although no one blames anyone. Thus, after exactly two years and two weeks, Allison had the opportunity to be actively with the team again.

Speaking to Motorsport.com, Allison said of her return to her old job, "I don't think there is a better or more enjoyable job in Formula 1 than being a coach." said.

Allison continued:

“Of course it's not a stress-free job, but it's absolutely brilliant in terms of the satisfaction that every little breakthrough you make and every win you make.

“And then there's figuring out what's wrong and trying to make things better with your co-workers. This is a wonderful, never ending puzzle. It's not like it's unloved."

After the changes, Mercedes is expected to perform more successfully in the 2023 season. It is thought that Allison will play an important role in returning the team to its old days as a coach.
