Dos and Don'ts for Toilet Training for Children

Experts list the do's and don'ts for a successful toilet training under 8 headings. Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Brain Hospital Specialist Clinical Psychologist Ayşe Şahin stated what should be done in toilet training for children and mentioned the common mistakes.

Up to the age of 3, toilet training can be earned

Specialist Clinical Psychologist Ayşe Şahin stated that children generally gain toilet habit when they are 18-36 months old and said, “It can be thought that children reach sufficient maturity to start toilet training when they are 20 months on average, but some children can reach this maturity in the 18th month and some in the 24th month. If we take into account the individual differences, we can say that the full acquisition of toilet training in children can continue until the end of the age of 3 ”.

How do we know if the child is ready for toilet training?

Stating that three important criteria should be considered in order to understand that the child is ready for toilet training, Ayşe Şahin listed the criteria as follows;

Bladder control

The child needs to urinate several times but in sufficient quantities rather than repeatedly in small amounts during the day. The diapers should remain dry when opened at intervals of 2-3 hours. He / she should be able to express the need to go to the toilet with his gestures and posture to his parents.

Physical development

The hand, finger and eye coordination of the child should be developed enough to be able to grasp and disassemble various objects. In addition, he should be able to perform basic self-care skills such as removing his clothes and washing his hands.

Mental development

The child should be able to show the organs on his face, go to a certain place himself such as the kitchen or bathroom, imitate his parents in simple tasks, bring a toy that is requested from him, and also express his wishes, even with simple words.

It should be spoken by making eye contact

Stating that before starting to work, parents should face their children and talk by making eye contact, Şahin said, “It can be said that he is now growing, he has come to a situation where he can urinate and poop into the toilet like adults. "It would be useful to show how he should do behaviors such as going to the toilet, opening the lid of the toilet, lowering his trousers, sitting and flushing," he said.

Don't make these mistakes

Expert Clinical Psychologist Ayşe Şahin listed the most common mistakes in toilet training as follows:

Not ready for your child

Families can start to get rid of diapers as soon as possible before the child is ready.

Mom's indecisive attitude

Wearing diapers again for reasons such as going out after starting toilet training complicates the learning process of this toilet habit andzamcausing the hang.

Psychological reasons

Processes such as the birth of a new sibling and starting a nursery are periods when the child is already trying to cope with a problem. It is not appropriate to start toilet training during these periods.

Insistent attitude

Parent's insistence can prevent the child from stubbornly doing the desired behavior. Although there are problems, a patient and prudent attitude will support the acquisition of this habit.
