Chinese automotive giant Chery has launched a remarkable warranty program to boost consumer confidence in new energy vehicles (NEVs). The company announced it will offer a lifetime battery warranty to the first owner of all fully electric, plug-in hybrid, and range extender vehicles equipped with the Rhino battery pack in China.
The new policy covers not only batteries but also electric motors and electronic control units. The warranty will apply to vehicles not used for commercial purposes.
Strict security regulations have been implemented in China.
Chery emphasized that its new warranty program complies with the GB38031-2025 standard, which came into effect in China on July 1, 2026, and is considered one of the industry's strictest battery safety regulations. Also known as the "no fire or explosion" standard, the new regulation requires that the battery pack not catch fire or explode for at least two hours following a thermal runaway.
The company also announced that if damage occurs due to thermal runaway caused by a non-human-caused battery failure, the vehicle owner will be provided with a new vehicle of the same model. Rhino batteries are currently used in various models under the Chery brand, including Chery, Exeed, Jetour, and iCar.
The new safety standard also sets important criteria regarding battery durability. According to this standard, batteries must pass three separate impact tests using 30 mm diameter steel balls with 150 joules of energy without catching fire or exploding. The standard also mandates that no ignition or explosion should occur after 300 rapid charging cycles.
