Tesla's highly anticipated autonomous robotaxi, Cybercab, has had many of its technical specifications revealed in official documents submitted to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Details ranging from the vehicle's weight and motor power to battery capacity and range are now known.
The Cybercab is designed to weigh 1.412 kg. This is approximately 317 kilograms less than the lightest Tesla Model 3. The weight reduction stems from its steering-less design and the removal of control elements not required for fully autonomous operation. Given that electric vehicles are generally heavy, this weight reduction is considered a successful achievement.
Motor, Battery and Efficiency
According to EPA filings, the Cybercab will be equipped with a single front-mounted permanent magnet electric motor. The motor will deliver 163 kW (219 horsepower) of output, and the vehicle will be front-wheel-drive. This power level is designed to provide sufficient acceleration for urban taxi services. The documents indicate that the vehicle will carry a compact 48 kWh battery pack and operate at 326 volts.
In laboratory tests, the Cybercab achieved a range of 673 km. However, the EPA applies a correction factor to these results to reflect real-world usage conditions. With a standard correction factor of 70%, the official range of the vehicle is expected to be around 470-480 kilometers. This efficiency rate, at 165 Wh/mile, is among the highest for electric vehicles. For comparison, the previously most efficient vehicle, the Lucid Air, has a value of 230 Wh/mile. With this efficiency, the Cybercab could significantly reduce operating costs for a taxi company aiming for 20-hour daily operations.
Production date and price are unknown.
While EPA documents clearly reveal the vehicle's technical details, the production start date and final sales price are still unknown. Tesla management has previously stated its goal of bringing the Cybercab to market before 2027 with a starting price under $30. However, the fact that fully autonomous driving technology is not yet ready for widespread use creates uncertainty about whether this timeline will be achieved.
