Mitsubishi is bringing back the Eclipse name, familiar to car enthusiasts for many years, with a fully electric model. The company shared the first images of the new 2027 Eclipse Sportback EV, confirming that the vehicle will be officially unveiled in the coming weeks.

Design similar to Nissan LEAF.

The new Eclipse Sportback EV was developed as a product of the alliance between Mitsubishi and Nissan. The model uses the same platform as the third-generation Nissan LEAF and largely resembles the LEAF in terms of design. However, Mitsubishi states that it differentiates the vehicle with brand-specific front and rear design details.

The shared images highlight Mitsubishi's characteristic "Triple Diamond" logo and redesigned bumpers. However, the overall body structure and silhouette largely share features with the new LEAF.

Mitsubishi has not yet announced the technical specifications and pricing. However, the vehicle is expected to use the same powertrain as the LEAF. In this case, the Eclipse Sportback EV will likely be offered with a 75 kWh battery pack and a 174 horsepower front-wheel-drive electric motor. The same system provides approximately 488 km of range in the LEAF, according to estimates by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The new model is also expected to come with a NACS charging port, which is becoming increasingly standard in North America. This will allow the vehicle to access much of the Tesla Supercharger network.

While there's no official price announcement, it's expected to carry a price tag close to the new Nissan LEAF, which starts at around $30 in the US. In that case, the Eclipse Sportback EV could be one of the most affordable electric cars on the US market, alongside the Chevrolet Bolt.
