The Huawei and JAC-backed Maextro S800 became the best-selling model in China's ultra-luxury sedan market (priced at over 700 yuan) in April 2026. According to ECC Intelligence data, the S800 topped the list with 1.142 units sold in April. The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class came in second, the Porsche Panamera third, while the BMW 7 Series and i7 dropped to fifth place.

The Maextro S800 has made a remarkable mark in China's high-income sedan market. Leading the sedan segment priced above 700 yuan by April 2026, the model achieved sales of 1.142 units.

During the same period, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class came in second with 736 units, the Porsche Panamera third with 616 units, and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class fourth with 521 units. The BMW 7 Series and i7 combined for 436 units, placing them fifth, while the Audi A8 dropped to sixth place with 260 units.

This table shows that in China's ultra-luxury sedan segment, domestic brands are no longer just alternatives, but directly occupying the leading position. S800 sales in April approached the combined total of the second-place Mercedes-Maybach S-Class and the third-place Porsche Panamera.

While European-based models still dominate the rest of the segment, the fact that Maextro, a brand born from a partnership between Huawei and JAC, tops the list clearly demonstrates the shift in the Chinese luxury car market.

The decline for BMW was also one of the notable points on the list. The BMW 7 Series and i7, which were in second place behind the Maextro S800 in January 2026, dropped to fifth place in April.

During the same period, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class rose to second place, while the Porsche Panamera climbed from sixth to third. The Audi A8, which was previously in the top five, dropped to sixth place in April.

Looking at the January-April period, the Maextro S800's leadership becomes even more apparent. The model achieved sales of 5.465 units in the first four months of 2026. The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class came in second with 3.012 units sold during the same period.

January-April sales

The BMW 7 Series and i7 came in third with a combined 2.976 units, followed by the Mercedes-Benz S-Class with 2.596 units in fourth place, the Porsche Panamera with 1.362 units in fifth, and the Audi A8 with 1.309 units in sixth place.

The S800's April performance also showed that the model is recovering after a decline in the previous two months. Sales in the Chinese domestic market were at 2.798 units in January 2026. This dropped to 922 units in February and 783 units in March. The 1.142 units sold in April represent a 45,9% increase on a monthly basis.

The model's sales graph for the end of 2025 also indicated a strong start. The Maextro S800 began its delivery process in August 2025 with 1.006 units sold. Sales continued with 1.896 units in September, 1.970 units in October, 2.205 units in November, and 4.223 units in December. The increase in December 2025 compared to November was 91,5 percent.

The S800 was developed under the Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance model in collaboration with Maextro, Huawei, and JAC Motors. As the brand's first mass-produced vehicle, it launched in the Chinese market in 2020. The model is available in fully electric and range-extending electric versions. The price ranges from 708,000 yuan to 1,018,000 yuan, which is approximately $104,100 to $149,600 at current exchange rates.

Huawei is also preparing new hardware updates for the S800. The company previously confirmed that the updated S800 will receive an 896-line mass-produced lidar system. This lidar system operates with a dual optical path architecture for intelligent driving functions. On the Maestro side, the V800 luxury MPV model and the S800 Grand Design version with extensive customization options have also appeared in regulatory applications.

The S800 Grand Design version will be the brand's stepping stone to a higher luxury segment. Huawei executive Richard Yu previously stated that this version is positioned as an option targeting the luxury segment in the 2 million yuan price range. This amount is approximately equivalent to $294.

In China, European brands still hold a strong position in the ultra-luxury sedan segment. The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, Porsche Panamera, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series/i7, and Audi A8 continue to occupy the top spots. However, the Maextro S800's clear leadership in both April and the January-April period demonstrates that local Chinese brands are becoming permanent players in the top price range as well.

German premium brands are also facing pressure in their performance in China. BMW Group's deliveries in China fell 10 percent year-on-year to 143.958 units in the first quarter of 2026. Mercedes-Benz deliveries decreased by 27 percent to 111.600 units during the same period. Audi also experienced a decline in China deliveries. In March, Audi A6L sales fell 9 percent year-on-year to 15.262 units, while BMW 5 Series sales remained largely flat at 11.304 units.
