What is the major danger in Takata airbags?
At the heart of this widespread Opel recall are Takata-branded airbag mechanisms, affecting numerous automotive brands globally. According to technical details shared by Opel, the chemicals within these airbags undergo structural degradation over time. This risk increases exponentially, particularly in vehicles exposed to hot and high-humidity climates for extended periods.
Chemical degradation can cause the trigger mechanism to violently disintegrate when the airbag is activated in the event of a potential accident. Metal fragments that could be ejected into the cockpit as a result of this disintegration pose a serious risk of injury to the driver and passengers, and in the worst-case scenario, could be life-threatening. To mitigate this danger, the manufacturer has announced that the driver's airbag module will be gradually replaced with a new one.
