With the increasing use of autonomous driving technologies, accidents and the way these accidents are reported continue to attract the attention of the public and experts. The transparency of safety data and accident details published by companies directly affects the level of trust in this field.
In several significant accidents that occurred recently, vehicles operating in autonomous mode collided with various objects or other vehicles. These included colliding with a stationary object while traveling at 27 kilometers per hour with cruise control, making contact with a bus that suddenly appeared in front of the vehicle while it was stationary, colliding with a truck at 6 kilometers per hour, and making contact with stationary objects during low-speed reversing maneuvers. It was also noted that a previously recorded accident was later updated with new criteria for hospital admission.
The Security Debate Raised by Statistics
The report shows that when considering the accident rate relative to the total distance traveled by the fleet, approximately one accident occurs for every 57.000 miles. This rate is approximately four times higher than the average driver rates reported in the company's own safety reports. This adds a new dimension to the ongoing debate about the safety of autonomous systems.
