Audi Admits to Naming: A4 is Returning

German automotive giant Audi has officially admitted that one of the most radical steps it took to restructure its model range was a mistake. The company acknowledged that one of the brand's most recognizable models, since 1994, was a mistake. A4 leaving his name A5 The company is abandoning its decision to switch to the new label based on overwhelming customer and dealer feedback.

Number Strategy That Leads to Confusion

The strategy, implemented in 2023, aimed to allocate odd-numbered models to internal combustion engine vehicles and even-numbered models to fully electric vehicles. Following this logic, the classic sedan and station wagon (Avant) models were grouped under the A5 umbrella. However, Audi management determined that this change, instead of simplifying the market, caused significant confusion. Customers found it difficult to part with the A4 brand, which had a thirty-year history, and while the vehicles remained fundamentally the same, the name change weakened brand perception.

The Decision to Return to the Classical Hierarchy

Audi CEO Gernot Döllner confirmed that the brand will return to its traditional naming convention. Accordingly, the letters “A” will continue to be used for passenger cars and “Q” for crossover models, with class distinctions indicated by the usual numbers. Döllner hinted that the A4 name will reappear in the product range with the next model update. This move demonstrates Audi's acceptance of the strength of its rich heritage and customer habits, even amidst its digital transformation.
