Car and Light Commercial Vehicle Sales Increased

According to data provided by the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD), automobile sales in Türkiye increased by 2023% in the January-June period of 5,4 compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching a total of 488 units. Light commercial vehicle sales increased by 3% to 4,3 units.

During this period, the following sales figures were recorded in the Turkish automobile market:

  • Gasoline cars: 229 thousand 128
  • Hybrid cars: 131 thousand 686
  • Diesel car: 38 thousand 73
  • LPG cars: 3
  • Fully electric cars: 84

When vehicles with an “extended range” system, where a gasoline generator charges the battery and the drive is provided by the electric motor, are included, electric car sales increase to 85. Moreover, extended range cars are included in the “electric” class as a Customs Tariff Statistical Position.

Declining Trend in Gasoline and Diesel Car Sales

In the first half of the year, there was a 25% decrease in gasoline car sales and a 24% decrease in diesel car sales, while a 6,9% increase was recorded in LPG vehicles. During this period, hybrid car sales increased by 102,8% and fully electric car sales increased by 138,4%. It is stated that the main reason for the decrease in diesel car sales is that global manufacturers continue to stop diesel car production and therefore new diesel cars are not offered to the market.

Market Share of Fully Electric Vehicles is Increasing

The market share of gasoline cars in sales decreased from 66% in the first six months of last year to 47% in the same period this year. The share of diesel cars decreased from 10,8% to 7,8%, while the share of LPG cars remained constant at 0,7%.

The market share obtained from total sales in the January-June period was as follows:

  • Fully electric cars: from 7,7% to 17,4%
  • Hybrid cars: from 14% to 27%

When the cars are evaluated as fully electric, extended range electric and hybrid, it is seen that 44,6% of the total market consists of vehicles with electric motors and total sales reached 217 thousand 580. This situation reveals that 10 out of every 4 cars sold in Türkiye are electric or hybrid vehicles.

In the same period, plug-in hybrid sales reached 25 units, accounting for 941% of hybrid vehicles. The increase in this area compared to the same period last year was recorded as 5,3%.

In June, a total of 25 “fully electric” cars were sold. The market share of these cars in June was calculated as 646%. In the same month, 27,4 hybrid cars were sold, and the market share of these vehicles was recorded as 22%.
