The New Mercedes-Benz E-Class: Bridge Between Worlds

The E-Class has been setting the standard in the mid-range luxury sedan world for over 75 years. Mercedes-Benz opens a whole new chapter in this segment in 2023: The new E-Class marks the transition from the internal combustion engine to electric powertrain systems. It also provides a comprehensive digital user experience with its new electronic architecture. E 220 d 4MATIC and E 180 engine options specially produced for Turkey will be offered for the first time in Turkey.

Traditional body proportions and special characteristic lines in the exterior

The new E-Class features the traditional three-volume sedan body proportions (Length: 4.949 mm, Width: 1.880 mm, Height: 1.468 mm). The long hood of the car, which has a short front axle extension, is followed by the cockpit positioned far back. The rear cabin design, positioned at the rear, has a trunk extension that harmoniously follows it. At 2.961 mm, the wheelbase is 22 mm longer than the previous generation E-Class.

The shiny surface, reminiscent of the radiator panel of the Mercedes-EQ models, serves as an aesthetic connection point between the redesigned sporty headlights and the radiator grille. The radiator grille, which is designed in three dimensions, can gain an innovative, classic or sporty look depending on the exterior design concept. Instead of the high-performance LED headlights offered as standard, DIGITAL LIGHT can be preferred as an option. Regardless of which headlight type is preferred, its design makes itself noticeable at any time of the day and night. The headlight design, which is a design tradition of Mercedes-Benz and reminiscent of the eyebrow line, also shows itself in the new E-Class. On the hood of the car, there are power domes emphasizing sportiness.

The profile view of the car reveals the harmonious body proportions, thanks to the cabin positioned at the rear. Hidden door handles used in Mercedes-Benz models can be purchased as an option. Characteristic lines on the side underline the car's sporty character.

At the rear, the two-piece LED taillights with a new contour and a special design stand out. The Mercedes-Benz star motif on each tail lamp reveals itself at any time of the day.

Interior design featured by MBUX Superscreen

The dashboard prepares the interior for a unique digital experience. When the E-Class is equipped with the optional front passenger screen, the large glass surface of the MBUX Superscreen extends to the central screen, providing a holistic view. The fully digital instrument panel, located in the driver's field of vision, is visually separated from this structure. In versions without a passenger screen, the screen is replaced by decorations that can be offered in different options. The visually diverging central screen creates the effect of floating above the concave surface of this panel.

The front of the instrument cluster is illuminated by 64-colour ambient lighting. The light strip extends beyond the A-pillars to the doors after drawing a wide arc on the dashboard, enhancing the feeling of spaciousness in the interior. The control unit, which appears to float above the door panels, matches the appearance of the glass surfaces of the screens.

The center console, which has a homogeneous design with the front armrest, merges with the lower part of the front console in a straight line. The storage compartment with lid and cup holder is integrated into the three-dimensionally shaped unit at the front. There is a soft armrest area at the back of the center console.

The door center panel is seamlessly joined to the armrest by a concave fold. The front part, which includes electric window controls and door handles, was designed as an element that visually emphasizes the advanced technology of the car with its metallic details. The contours of the seat and backrest of the seats extend from the inside out to create a graceful flow. In addition, thanks to the layered design, the base of the seat creates a feeling of floating on the floor. Indented vertical lines expand upwards and follow the outer contour. The E-Class is at the forefront of its class in terms of interior space. The driver has 5mm more headroom than the previous model. Rear-seat passengers benefit from an increased wheelbase of 2 cm. In addition to a 10 mm increase in knee distance and 17 mm in legroom, the rear elbow width also promises a significant increase of 1.519 mm. Reaching 25mm, this increase offers almost as much space as an S-Class. Luggage volume is up to 540 liters.

Half of the engine options are Plug-In Hybrid.

Thanks to systematic electrification and smart volume reduction solutions, the new E-Class sets new standards in efficiency with all its engine options. Half of the engine options consist of fourth-generation Plug-In Hybrid systems. Three of the six engine options offered combine the advantages of an internal combustion engine with those of an electric car.

Internal combustion engines are the current modular Mercedes-Benz engine family FAME (Modular Engines Family), consisting of inline four-cylinder or six-cylinder engines.

Both diesel and gasoline engines are powered by an integrated starter generator (ISG), apart from turbocharging. Therefore, these engine options are semi-hybrids. Thanks to the new battery technology, the electric motors offer 15 kW of additional power and 17 Nm of additional torque instead of 205 kW.

E 180 engine option specific to the Turkish market

In the Turkish market, two different engine options, one with gasoline and one with diesel, will be offered at the first stage, E 180 and E 220 d 4MATIC.

Exclusive to the Turkish market, the E 180 M 254 engine incorporates the most advanced engine technologies, including NANOSLIDE® cylinder coating or CONICSHAPE® cylinder honing. Both engines come with a 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission as standard.

AIRMATIC and rear axle steering are optional.

The new E-Class provides agility and high road holding thanks to the front wheels, each of which is precisely steered by four control arms. The five-link independent rear axle provides superior stability on the straights. The springs and shock absorbers on the front axles are combined in a single strut and do not take part in steering the wheels. Thus, the suspension system can give sensitive responses. The front subframe and rear axle carrier keep the suspension and body free of vibration and noise. The front track width of the new E-Class is 1.634 mm and the rear track width is 1.648 mm. In addition, the wheels can be equipped with different rim options up to 21 inches.

An optional technical package is offered in the new E-Class. The technical package includes the versatile AIRMATIC air suspension system with ADS+ continuously adjustable shock absorbers and rear axle steering. Therefore every zamThe AIRMATIC suspension with the adaptive damping system ADS+ provides maximum comfort at a high level of precision. AIRMATIC also keeps the car's ground clearance constant with its level control function, regardless of the vehicle load, or allows changing at the desired level. The new E-Class exhibits agile and balanced driving characteristics with optional rear axle steering and accompanying more linear ratio front axle steering ratio. Rear axle with a steering angle of 4,5 degrees, turning diameter azamIt can reduce i by 90 centimeters. Turning circle decreases to 4 meters instead of 12,0 meters in 11,1MATIC versions, while it decreases from 11,6 meters to 10,8 meters in rear-wheel drive versions.

Impressive and immersive entertainment experience

In the new E-Class, music, games and many content can be experienced with almost all senses. The E-Class is now smarter, thanks to digital innovations in the interior. It also opens up a whole new dimension of customization and interaction. Thanks to its software-oriented approach, the new E-Series takes its electronic infrastructure to a more digital point by reducing analog hardware.

Computer functions that were previously handled separately are now combined into a single processor. Thus, the displays and the MBUX entertainment system share a very powerful central on-board computer. Thanks to the faster data flow, the operating performance of the system increases.

Thanks to the artificial intelligence in the new E-Class, MBUX offers personalized recommendations for numerous infotainment, comfort and vehicle functions. With the zero-layer design, the user does not have to navigate through sub-menus or give voice commands. Situationally and contextually, apps seem top of mind. Thus, accessing a function becomes effortless. Thanks to the augmented reality for MBUX Navigation, which is available as an option, it overlays graphic navigation and traffic information on live images.

Until now, mostly phone apps were accessible by mirroring the user's smartphone to the infotainment system. Apple Car Play or Android Auto enables certain functions of the mobile device to be used on the center and passenger display while the vehicle is in motion. Software experts at Mercedes-Benz have developed a new compatibility layer that allows third-party applications to be installed.

Two different sound systems are offered with the new E-Class. The standard sound system consists of 7 speakers and a 5 channel 125 Watt amplifier. Burmester® 4D surround sound system is available as an option. Burmester® 4D surround sound system offers a much improved sound quality with its 21 speakers and 15 channel 730 Watt amplifier, and turns listening to music into a physical experience thanks to the bass vibrations from the front seats.

Music becomes visible: Audio Visualization

Thanks to the new 64-color ambient lighting with Sound Visualization function, new E-Class users can experience music with three senses. It can hear, feel (via audio resonance transducers in the optional Burmester® 4D surround sound system) as well as see (with Dolby Atmos® technology if desired) music and movie or application sounds. The visualization, which will be presented for the first time with the E-Class, takes place in the light strip of 64-color ambient lighting. For example, fast beats can cause rapid light changes, while flowing rhythms can create softly converging lighting.

The entertainment experience is for the front passenger every zamthe moment is impressive. The front passenger can watch dynamic content such as TV or video streaming on its optionally available screen. Thanks to its advanced camera-based protection, it automatically dims when the driver is watching the screen, offering the pleasure of safe driving without interrupting the fun.

Voice commands:

MBUX becomes even more functional with voice commands. With the “Speak Only” function, the intelligent voice command can now be activated without “Hey Mercedes”. When the function is activated, a red microphone icon on the screen indicates that the car is ready and waiting for a command.

Increased daily comfort: Routines

Mercedes-Benz is working on artificial intelligence (AI) to learn which comfort systems users regularly use. AI is intended to automate various functions under the same conditions. This creates personalized automation. Mercedes-Benz calls this already highly developed innovation 'routine'.

With the launch of the new E-Series, users will be able to use templates for standard routines. They will also have the option to create the routines themselves. In doing so, users can connect various functions and conditions. For example, they can issue commands such as “If the interior temperature is below twelve degrees Celsius, turn on the seat heating and set the ambient lighting to a warm orange”.

THERMOTRONIC with Digital Ventilation Control

The THERMOTRONIC three-zone automatic air conditioning system (optional extra) and digital ventilation control take the comfort experience even further. It automatically adjusts the front ventilation grilles according to the desired ventilation type. When you mark the desired area on the air conditioning screen, the air outlets automatically direct to the area and provide the desired ventilation effortlessly. Zone selection can be made for each seat. In addition, the ventilation grilles can be adjusted not only automatically, but also manually.

Numerous driving assistance systems, some of which have been further developed

Among the standard driving assistance systems of the E-Class are functions such as ATTENTION ASSIST, Active Brake Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Parking Package, Rear View Camera and Automatic Adaptation to Active Speed Limit Assist. The status and activity of the driving assistance systems are displayed in full screen in the driver display's assistance mode.

ATTENTION ASSIST offers a distraction warning on the driver's display (optional extra) thanks to the camera. For example, Active Steering Assist, available as part of the Driving Assistance Package PLUS (optional), helps keep the car in its lane. As before on highways, the E-Class can now automatically take off after stopping on city roads. In addition, Active Steering Assist cannot be used because the lane markings cannot be seen clearly. zamAt moments, it notifies the driver with vibrations in the steering wheel.

Sophisticated body concept and coordinated safety systems

The safety concept of the E-Class is based on a rigid passenger compartment and a body with deformable crash zones. Safety systems such as seat belts and airbags have been specially adapted to this structure. In the event of an accident, protective measures are activated in accordance with the situation.

In addition to the driver and front passenger airbags, a knee airbag is also offered as standard on the driver's side. It prevents the legs from contacting the steering column or dashboard in the event of a frontal collision. Standard glass airbags reduce the risk of head hitting the side window or penetrating objects. In addition, in the event of a serious side collision, the window airbag on the side of the collision extends from the A-pillar to the C-pillar like a curtain over the front and rear side windows. In the event of a possible rollover, the airbags on both sides are activated. In addition to the head restraint system, side airbags can also cover the chest area, including the rear headrests (optional).

Materials that save resources

Many E-Series components are made from natural resource-saving materials (recycled and renewable raw materials). For example, the base seat version of the E-Class uses undyed alpaca wool upholstery combined with a recycled material. For the first time, certified recycled raw materials are used in the foam of the seats, according to the "mass balance approach", and this material exhibits the same performance as the raw materials produced from crude oil. In this way, the need for fossil resources is reduced while maintaining product quality.

In addition, Mercedes-Benz has been producing with a carbon neutral balance in all its factories around the world since 2022. Externally supplied electricity is carbon-free, as it comes only from renewable energy sources. The company also aims to increase renewable energy production in its facilities. Until the end of 2024, investment will be made to increase solar cells at the Sindelfingen plant. In addition, water consumption and the amount of waste produced will be reduced.

The E-Series, a long-term success story

Mercedes-Benz has produced over 1946 million middle class vehicles since 16. The legacy of the E-Class goes back to the early days of the brand.

When production resumed after WWII, the 1936 V (W 170), first introduced in 136, returned to production. The Saloon became Mercedes-Benz's first post-war passenger car in 1947. The "Ponton" bodied 1953 model (W 180) with independent bodywork of 120 had new technical and structural features. In 1961, four-cylinder versions of the “Tailfin” series (W 110) followed. In 1968 the “Stroke/8” series (W 114/115) symbolized the next step in the upper middle class. The 1976 model series after 123 was even more successful.

The 1984 model, produced from 1995 to 124, was first renamed the E-Class from mid-1993. Its double headlight face and innovative technologies were characteristic features of the 1995 series, which was introduced to the market in 210. The 211 model E-Class was launched in early 2002. This was followed in 2009 by the E-Class 212 (Sedan and Estate) and 207 (Cabriolet and Coupé). The 213 model made its debut in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class in 2016 and for the first time since 2017 as the All-Terrain. There are also coupé and convertible body types of the 238 series.
