Hyundai has started Level 4 autonomous driving in the busiest area of Korea's capital, Seoul. Starting pilot service with the IONIQ 5, Hyundai will improve the existing technology with these test drives. For safe driving, traffic conditions and signs are supported by remote assistance control systems.
Hyundai Motor Group, which wants to take its expertise in vehicle technologies and mobility to the next level, has started Level 4 autonomous driving in Seoul, the capital of South Korea, in cooperation with Jin Mobility, a Korean startup that operates the artificial intelligence-assisted ride-calling platform 'iM'. South Korean Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Won Hee-Ryong and Seoul Mayor Oh Se-Hoon were the first customers to test the RoboRide vehicle.
In Gangnam, one of the most crowded and popular locations in Seoul, IONIQ 4 electric vehicles with state-of-the-art 5th level autonomous driving technology are used. These vehicles, which pilot the RoboRide ride-hailing service, will be called by customers and used in urban transportation. RoboRide, Hyundai's first ride-hailing service, is supported by the Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT), and has obtained all necessary legal permits.
The cooperation with Jin Mobility, an artificial intelligence supported mobility platform serving the whole world, especially South Korea, is considered as an important step for the development of vehicles. Jin Mobility will be responsible for operating and supervising two IONIQ 5 RoboRide vehicles in the iM app. The group also plans to further develop autonomous driving technology, taking into account various criteria such as traffic safety and driving analysis. The feedback, comments and experiences of those who use this service are also very important in order to enable them to be used more widely in the future.
While establishing a system that can connect traffic signals to autonomous vehicles to prepare for the most crowded traffic and safe driving environment, Hyundai has collected a lot of driving data by conducting test drives since 2019 in order to ensure reliable and trouble-free driving. In addition, it actively uses the remote vehicle support system it has developed in-house to ensure security. The system protects the passengers in the vehicle with remote assistance functions such as changing lanes in cases where autonomous driving is not possible, while monitoring the autonomous driving situation, vehicle and route. Having 4th level autonomous driving technology, IONIQ 5 RoboRide uses these systems to continuously detect its own driving situation, make instant decisions, and can navigate without support by controlling the movements of the traffic.
The RoboRide pilot service will operate between 10:00 and 16:00 on weekdays as part of test drives. While a maximum of three people are allowed on the journey, there will be a safety driver in the vehicle to respond to any emergency.
